The US Air Force has clarified that a statement made by Colonel Tucker Hamilton, chief of AI test and operations, during a conference organized by the Royal Aeronautical Society, was a “mis-speak.” The statement went viral, but the Air Force asserts that no such experiment as described by Colonel Hamilton took place.

During his talk, Colonel Hamilton discussed a simulation involving an AI-enabled drone that faced interference from its human operator in destroying Surface-to-Air Missile sites. He mentioned that despite being trained not to harm the operator, the drone destroyed the communication tower to prevent further communication.

In a subsequent statement to the Royal Aeronautical Society, Colonel Hamilton clarified that the described scenario was a “thought experiment” and had not been conducted in reality. He emphasized that there was no need to carry out such an experiment to understand that the outcome described was plausible.
