Artificial intelligence can process vast amounts of data, handling tasks far beyond human capabilities. Yet, simple riddles often trip AI up, revealing something profound about both machine limitations and the depths of human reasoning. While AI excels at pattern recognition and some forms of logic, it struggles with common-sense reasoning and temporal logic. These challenges shed light not only on AI’s development but also on the mysterious workings of the human brain.

In an experimental lab at Vrije Universiteit, Filip Ilievski is pushing the boundaries of AI by exploring its limitations in solving puzzles. These tasks—designed to assess reasoning—highlight key differences between how machines and humans process information. AI’s primary strength lies in identifying patterns from large datasets. However, when confronted with brain teasers, AI sometimes produces baffling results, unable to grasp basic temporal logic or everyday common sense. A classic example is asking an AI if someone was alive at noon after their death is stated at 11 pm—it may answer ambiguously, struggling to make simple deductions based on given timelines.

Understanding these discrepancies is critical for AI improvement, but it also opens up new discussions in neuroscience. We barely understand our own brains, but comparing human reasoning to AI logic can help illuminate some of the gaps in our knowledge. Modern AI systems, like GPT-4, model their operations loosely on how our brains function, particularly through neural networks. Yet, this structural mimicry doesn’t guarantee AI will “think” the way humans do.

Interestingly, while AI stumbles on seemingly easy questions, it can outperform humans in others. For instance, riddles designed to trap people into trusting their intuition often fail to trick AI. Problems like the famous “bat and ball” riddle (where intuition can lead people astray) are tackled by AI with cold, rational calculation.

When AI and human reasoning are compared, it becomes clear that machines and brains process information differently. Studying these differences isn’t just a way to make AI more human-like—it’s also a step toward unlocking the secrets of how our own minds function. Even though AI is advancing rapidly, humans still hold an edge in abstract thinking and problem-solving. But for how long?

As AI continues to evolve, it may eventually match human cognition in some areas—but the road ahead is paved with challenges, both technical and philosophical.
